This assignment came from the inspiration of a layout from magazine of our choice. We created a two page spread and focused on composition with the topics of 'the first week back' of classes.

Illuminated Objects

In this assignment we had to choose five objects that have importance to us and create a two page spread using black pen and colored pencil. The composition of my objects are random and I not only drew the objects but added other drawings and text that was associated with my five objects. My five objects were my lp balm, phone, glasses, a special necklace, and my bible.

Entrance to the Future

In order to get into the Interior Architecture program, we had to chose an space that we thought was a well-designed environment or artifact. I choose an space that one of my favorite designers created. I not only drew two spaces that I believed was well designed for the purpose of the client, but I also built a 3-D model of the one of the space's floorplan. The experience of building it was very frustrating, but learning things during my first semester and looking back to what I knew when I was building the model just makes me realize how much I have truly learned so far....and so much more ahead of me!!

Light of Relaxation

The materials used were a frosted tissue box holder frame, plexiglass, floral glass pebbles, blue plastic film, and 40 watt compact fluorescent lightbulb.

In the final luminarie, I added more pebbles for the fullness of the color that I wanted to achieve. I had glued them in the inside on to the glass, but was critiqued that they wished that the pebbles were placed between the two pieces of glass instead of glued because you could mostly see the glue used. Instead of using the patterned frosted paper, in order to diffuse the lightbulb and to give off more color, I used blue covered plastic film that gave a blue glow to the luminarie. I also added pebbles to the top and instead of placing them inside, I turned them on the outside to give it more texture and the effect of re-flexing the light to give a glow of the pebbles. It was also critiqued to me that it seems like the top of the luminarie seemed like the pebbles needed to continue on the top side like a "cap." Instead of adding the film on the bottom to give off color, I played around with pebbles and decided to place some around the opening where the lightbulb is inserted. It gave off an interesting pattern on the surface. The platform that the holder sits on is four pieces of plexiglass because I did not want the light to be so close inside of the luminarie.

I had to switch from a 60 to 40 watt in order to not give off more of the light from the bulb but from the film and pebbles. I will continue to mess around with layers of film and try types of paper to get the bluish color effect that I like.

In our last project, we had to design a luminaire using two materials that we have used in previous projects plus a third material that we choose. My initial thought of a luminaire was a candle and the radiance the flame gives us depending on what type of container it is in. After, looking at different pictures of types of light sources, I began to think about the reflective of light through objects, especially made of glass, and the effects, color and patterns the object gives off. My inspiration came from pictures of gems, rain, water, and bubbles that are translucent but give off a prism of color or form symmetrically patterns.

Convey via Dialog

"Dialog can be used to express the interrelationships between elements in an artifact or environment." In this project, we used the concept of dialog to recognize the different relationships while intentional defining the space of the structure. Brainstorming ideas I was inspired by the saying "two halves make a whole." Having two separate structures only speaks of two different ideas, but dialog is formed once the two becomes one and the space is defined as a whole situation. Also, the idea of reflexiveness and symmetry played a deal in my project in bringing the concept of dialog between two parts becoming one.

This project focused on the concept of unity; the process of unifying elements in different ways. My first impression of tackling the project was taking two opposites and making into one whole element, but would be able to display the two different ideas. My first idea was west meets east where I would focus on western and eastern architecture. It was advised to me to possibly take this idea and try not to make it so literal. So playing around with materials and sketches, I can upwith "wat goes up must come down" and the interaction of the elements of up and down.

I came up with 3 separate structures with two different objects conveying the idea of up and down. I decided to combine the structures to make one whole object.

Structure with a side of Joints

In this project, we focused on the idea of structure using straws to support a 4"x4"x4" bristol board cube on a 8" base. We also looked at different ways on how to make a cube by articulating the edges with different types of joints. I decided to create my cube not using joints to connect, but connect/slide the tabs of the cube within each other. During critique, we gave one word of what our cube reminded us of, so looking at my cube, I automatically thought "puzzle." I took Kuniko's idea of making my cube look like an actually puzzle piece by using my base as the whole puzzle. I made a box using foam board and cut out the shape of the cube. My intentions with the straws were to make a crane like structure, so I looked at pictures of actually cranes and decided to base it off a bridge crane. In my first attempt, I built the structure that the straws held the cube from the bottom, but I wanted to make it look like the crane was pulling the cube out of the base. I decided to build a bridge crane out of the straws tied with yarn for sturdiness. Once I built it, I had a piece of foam connecting with the straws to hold the cube with an actually hook. It was critiqued to me that it would be more effectively if the cube was more integrated with the sturcture itself by wrapping the yarn coming off of the structure around the cube. So I took the yarn and wrapped it around the top straws so it would hold it at the top corners of the cube.

Intersection

In this project, we need to construct a container for a special object using the intersection of paper, fabric, and thread as our materials. I chose my glasses as my special object because I am blind as a bat, so I have to have them at ALL times. I had an idea of an open container to slip them in, but during my critique, it was brought to my attention that I would be competing with a well known idea with is the plastic or leather glasses case already. Rather than compete, I should come up with a container that might pertain to vision. I came up with the idea of an glasses book box since most people need their glasses to read. I constructed the frame from cardboard and covered it with fleece because it was a soft material that wouldn't scratch the lenses. My first container had the stitching in a white thread and only held one pair of glasses. During my critique, it was suggested that I would make the stitching more prominent for interest and that I would situate my glasses in the box that was more to scale. My final product shows that I used thicker yarn for the stitching and put a design on the top using a piece of paper with a suede fabric print on it. I added another place inside to add another pair of glasses to fit to scale. I also added Velcro to the flap and the tabs that held the glasses for easy opening.

Joinery of Nature

For our first project, we focused on the idea of joinery, but with natural artifacts. In order to join them, we needed to use a linear material such as string or thread. I didn't have an initial idea, but decided to pick up some items and try to match them up according to similarities or tried to find some contrasting elements that would work. I had a pine and a bush branch with a long piece of grass as the linear material. My concept was natural swing, but it didn't work out like i planned because the piece of grass came loose the way it was attached to the branch. So on the second time around, I choose to pick new materials, but keep my intention to find a natural item to join the other two together. I saw an interesting piece of bark laying on the ground under a oak tree. I happened to walk by a bush with yellow and green colors and instantly thought of the trees you would see on the side of a mountain during the change into the fall season. I decided to join them together with a piece of vine with the leaves still attached because it was flexible to tie and it tied in the "mountainous" theme I had as a concept.
The way that you might look at my item depends on what side is more interesting to you. From my class consensus, it looked better with the piece of branch in the back of the bark to contrast of the color.

My best friend went to the Georgia aquarium this summer and took some amazing pictures of the different animals. She takes better pictures than my anyways, but they angles and the opportunities that the animals gave her photograph looks like they came right out of National Geographic, I just wanted to share some pictures that I really loved with everyone else. Hope you enjoy!!
(If you take a look closely, you can see a small frog rested on the snake's back)

(Its quite amazing how she caught the bottom of the shark showing the sharp teeth!!! Never seen such a sight!!!)

Almost Feels Like You Are There

As my first post, I have explored other blogs of photography, paintings, and illustrations, but the one that really caught my eye was the blog of Karen Winters. The name of her blog is called "The Creative Journey" in which her paintings says it all. Because I love scenery paintings, I was automatically stuck on her page, but I felt that I was actually surrounded in that particular environment that she painted. The contrast between the bright, warm colors and the darker, shading colors makes the environment very realistic as if it was an actually photograph. I love the paintings of various environments during the sunset because she really picked up the warm colors of the trees, or sand, and even the setting sun, but also the cool colors of the incoming darkness. If you really love scenery paintings, you will love Karen Winters' painting. Almost feels like you are there!
